363 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PICKEN, Albert Stanley “Bert” Bert was born on January 24, 1922 in Hespeler, Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force on October 6, 1941 during World War II with the RCAF and was sent to England, where he was temporarily assigned to Ferry Command before being attached to the Royal Indian Air Force. Bert trained in Toronto and he flew Hawker Hurricanes. As a Flight Lieutenant, Bert flew in the Battle of Britain. In Burma, he flew four Cannon Hawker hurricanes and Mark 5 Spitfires. His pilot career ended with malaria. He was discharged on September 28, 1945. After the war, he worked as a layout developer in a plate shop and ended his working days as a numerical control machine programmer. He was member of the Legion Branch 272 for over 65 years. Bert passed away on January 6, 2015. PLEINIS, Herbert John “Herbie” Herbie was born on July 7, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) in December 1940 starting out with the Artillery but eventually transferring to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. Herbie was posted to Petawawa where he served with the 1st Canadian Airborne Regiment as a Paratrooper. He received a certificate from the Canadian Joint Air Training Centre commemorating his 100th jump. After serving in Korea, he was discharged but reenlisted later and served with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry prior to his final discharge in November 1970 at the rank of Corporal. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the War Medal 1939-1945, the Canadian Korea Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea, the United Nations Service Medal Korea and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He has been a member of the Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 29 years. PINNELL, Warden James Warden was born on March 8, 1921 in Echo Bay, Ontario. He joined the Army during World War II on May 11, 1942 and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was discharged on November 30, 1945. Warden received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star along with the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Warden passed away on September 4, 2002.
