349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PARISEE, Azuel J. “Ed” Azuel was born in Papineauville, Quebec on March 5, 1896. On April 10, 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces with the 162nd Battalion out of Callander, Ontario. While overseas he was assigned to the Machine Gun Corps 4th Battalion. He fought in England, France and Belgium during World War I. He did a second tour of duty in World War II as a reservist in Canada. Azuel was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He received a letter from Queen Elizabeth on the Canadian Legion’s Golden Anniversary, congratulating him and other soldiers for loyalty and allegiance pledged to her. Azuel was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifteen years. He was discharged on June 16, 1919 and he stood tall and proud that day knowing that he had contributed to peace in the world. Azuel passed away on August 24, 1978. PARKIN, James “Jim” Jim was born in Lanark, Scotland on April 19, 1893 to Alexander Parkin and Catherine Hastie and later raised on their farm in Nemphlar, Scotland. As a young man, he was the only member of his family to immigrate to Canada. Jim enlisted in the Canadian Army on November 27, 1914. He was in the 1st Corps, 4th C.M.R. (Canadian Mounted Rifles) Unit and received three medals for his service in World War I. On January 3, 1919, Private Parkin received his dispersal certificate. After his discharge, Jim worked as a postman in Toronto, where he met and married Lucy Large with whom he had a family of two daughter and two sons. Upon his retirement in 1954 from the Post Office, Jim and Lucy lived on a farm in Springbank, Alberta for a short time. After they returned to Ontario, Jim lived his last days in Orangeville passing away in 1957. PARKIN, George Thomas Ralph George was born on January 12, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on December 20, 1947. He served on many ships including the HMCS Micmac, Magnificent, Kooteney and Crescent. He served on the HMCS Huron in Korea. He received the Korea Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He was also granted Good Conduct Badges: the first on March 25, 1951; second on March 25, 1956; and third on March 25, 1961. He was discharged on April 2, 1973. George was married and had four children. Upon his retirement, he moved his family to Strathmore, Alberta. He was a member of the Strathmore Legion Branch 10. George passed away on January 24, 2003.
