347 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND OWENS (PATEY), James Richard “Jim” James was born to Edward and Jennie Patey (Collins) in Kent County, England on November 2, 1909. The three immigrated to Canada in 1912 on the Empress of Ireland and settled briefly in Goderich/Huron County. Difficult times were encountered and Jim and his younger brother were placed for adoption in 1915 and 1916 respectively. Jim became foster parented by the Owens family of Belgrave, Ontario where he remained until 1926. Footloose during the depression years, he roamed western Canada and the mid-western States until 1934 when he married Annie Lillian (Dennis) of Wingham, Ontario. They raised three children. Like his father Edward, who served in the Great War, Jim volunteered in Guelph, Ontario in 1941 with the Light Aircraft Regiment. He served in Canada, Britain and central Mediterranean areas during World War II and was honourably discharged in London, Ontario in 1945. Jim died on May 13, 1989 in London, ON. PALISKA, John John was born in Cierna-Leota, Czechoslovakia on September 15, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1942 and served with the Royal Regiment of Canada in England, Holland, Germany, and 1st Division at Oldenburg, Germany during World War II. He also served in the Queen’s York Rangers. He was discharged on May 8, 1946. He was an avid fisherman. John passed away on February 9, 1990 and is buried in the Veterans Columbarium, Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Erie. He was a member of the Frontier Legion Branch 71. OWENS, William R. William was born in Bentinck Township, Grey Co., Ontario on February 15, 1905. He enlisted in the Army on August 28, 1942 with Lord Strathcona’s Horse, 2nd Canadian Armoured Regiment. He served as a mechanic and front line cook in Canada, England, North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. On January 17, 1946 he married Trihntje Verbeek in Hoorn, Holland. After his discharge in 1946, she travelled as a war bride on the Mauritania to join him in Chelsey, Ontario. William was employed at Krug Bros. Furniture Factory. Together they raised four children and enjoyed fourteen grandchildren. William died in November 1971 one day after marching in the Remembrance Day parade. William was a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144 and had been for 25 years.
