343 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND OLAND, Francis Dwight Dwight was born in Peterborough, Ontario on January 16, 1916. He enlisted with the New Brunswick Rangers in October 1938 as Private. Later Dwight was promoted to Clerk and then Lance Corporal while stationed in Sydney, Nova Scotia. In September 1941, he became a marksman earning a cup and medals. His regiment sailed from Quebec City to Labrador. While there he was awarded the Good Conduct Badge in March 1943. He was permitted to marry Doris E. G. Anthony in Sydney, NS on August 17, 1943. Dwight’s regiment eventually disembarked in England in September 1943, where he was later TOS by the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in January 1944 and awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany till after World War II. He was discharged on February 26, 1946. Dwight was awarded the: 1939-1945 Star, the France-Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. After his discharge as Private, Dwight settled in Ajax, Ontario and with his wife, Doris, raised three girls. He participated in Square-dancing, Duplicate Bridge, was active with the Anglican Church and became Ajax’s first Scout Master. Dwight passed away on August 28, 1994. O’NEIL, Ernest James Ernest was born on September 8, 1898 in Montreal Quebec. He was just two months before his nineteenth birthday when he left his job in Montreal as a Clerk and enrolled in the infantry. He was assigned to 13th Canadian Infantry Battalion – The Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (The Black Watch) on July 31, 1917. He had already been rejected at an earlier enlistment attempt as, at only 5’4” with a 34” chest, he was considered “too short”. He served in Canada, England, France and Flanders during World War I. Unfortunately, for Ernest he was badly wounded in action and lost a limb. He was just one of the 3,154 soldiers from this Battalion wounded during the war. Total casualties were 4,445. Ernest became a long-time supporter of The War Amputations of Canada and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal by that organization. Ernest’s medal set, consisting of The British War Medal, Victory Medal, King George VI Coronation Medal (1937) and Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal (1953), have been refurbished and are proudly displayed at Kitchener’s Fred Gies Branch 50 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Also on display is his Meritorious Service Medal from The War Amputations of Canada. OLMSTEAD, William A. “Bill” Bill was born on January 3, 1970 in Brantford, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on October 1, 1987 as a Reservist with #1 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He served in Shilo, Manitoba and Lahr, Germany. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 543 Burford for twelve years.
