337 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NICOLSON, John “Jack” Jack was born in Scotland in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Toronto in May 1942 in the Transport command as a wireless operator-gunner. As sergeant he flew training operations in and out of Winnipeg before delivering planes out of the Bahamas to India and Egypt. He served during World War II and was discharged on June 30, 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, Jack moved several times, returning home to Minett as Post Master. He served as a volunteer fireman, later chief over the next 35 years with the township. Jack was a charter member of Peninsula Legion Branch 489. He earned the Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, Defence Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Jack passed away in November 1996. NOBBS (CARTER), Thelma Elaine Thelma was born in Georgetown, British Guiana on April 15, 1924. She joined the British Army during World War II serving with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) on May 25, 1944 in a clerical position. She served in her native country of British Guiana until she was discharged on June 15, 1946. She married Edgar Nobbs. NOBBS, Edgar Ian Edgar was born on June 15, 1922 in Dover, Kent, England. He enlisted in February 1943 with the British Army during World War II serving in British Guiana; Naples, Italy and Egypt. Edgar was a decoder. He was discharged in February 1946. He met Thelma Carter during his time in British Guiana and decided she was the gal for him and married her. The couple eventually made their way to Canada and settled in the community of Wellington, Ontario. Edgar passed away on July 2, 2016.
