335 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NELSON, James E. “Jim” Jim was born in Arran Township, Ontario on July 31, 1892. He enlisted in the Army on January 8, 1916 with the 160th Battalion. Jim served with the 4th Machine Gun Corps in Europe during World War I. He embarked from Halifax on October 17, 1916. He was discharged on June 16, 1919. He married Lillian Bell Newman and they had no family. He was the first President of the Tara Legion in 1946. He enjoyed sports and was an ardent player of cribbage and euchre tournaments. Jim passed away on January 22, 1978 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara. NICHOLLS, Rayburn John “Ray” Ray was born in Strathroy, Ontario on September 20, 1924. He worked on Army truck rollers and steering gears for Ingersoll. In 1943, during World War II, he joined the RCAF in London, ON and reported for basic training with the #1 IFS Mohawk driving the commanding Officer to Ottawa where he was recommended to the Trade Board and received his military transport qualification. He drove tractor trailer, gas trucks, and ambulance then was sent overseas on the Empress of Scotland troop ship. The ship arrived in Bristol, England where he was assigned to the 428 squadron at Middleton St. George; he drove tandem trucks with 16 ft. trailers or pups with bombs and supplies. Eventually he was sent to London, England the overseas headquarters, assigned to RCAF show circuit until 1946 where he was honourably discharged then flown back to Canada where he resided in Port Loring in 1958 with his family. Ray had been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 67 years. Ray passed away on January 24, 2018 NEWMAN, Roland Ellwood Roland was born in Somerville, Township, Victoria County, Ontario on April 26, 1899. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, 109th Battalion “D” Company on February 19, 1916 during World War I. He became a sniper and was wounded in France at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Roland passed away on September 13, 1966. He was a member of the Sir Sam Hughes Legion Branch 67 in Lindsay.
