MURRAY, Joseph Gerard “Jerry” Jerry was born in Nouville, Quebec on November 25, 1923. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on October 6, 1943 with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. He was a Private during World War II and was injured at the Battle of the Scheldt Estuary. He lost his right leg below the knee at the age of twenty and therefore wore prosthesis for almost seventy years. He had to live without being able to run, skate and ski. He was discharged on May 5, 1945. Upon returning to civilian life he retrained and worked as an accountant with the provincial government for 33 years. Before the war he did physical work which is what he was suited to so sitting at a desk was very difficult for him. He rarely spoke of his war time experiences but as he grew older shared some details. While he did not pay the ultimate price with the loss of his life he certainly paid in many other ways. He was a member of many Branches of the Legion totaling approximately 68 years. Jerry passed away on November 13, 2013.
