319 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MILLS, Richard William “Dick” Dick was born in Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario on October 14, 1925. During World War II, he enlisted in the RCNVR on April 17, 1944 at HMCS Star in Hamilton and was discharged on January 9, 1946 with a rank as Acting Stoker First Class. Dick was sent to HMCS Cornwallis and was assigned to HMCS Saguenay as part of a training crew. He also served on the corvette HMCS Lindsay. He was awarded the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Atlantic Star. While stationed at Cornwallis he met his future wife, Vera while on leave in Saint John, NB. She was in the CWAC. Dick volunteered for duty in Japan but the war ended and after demobilization he and Vera moved to Hamilton and were married. They raised eight children while he worked in the jewelry business and later for a number of the major department stores, in management and in sales. Dick is 91 and still lives in Hamilton in his own home. MILLS (CHAN), Vera May Vera was born in Doaktown, NB on August 24, 1925. During World War II, she enlisted in the CWAC on September 16, 1943 in Montreal at the age of eighteen. Vera was stationed first in Montreal and then in Saint John, NB. While in the Army she proved her prowess with a rifle by earning all three of the Army Dominion Marksman badges, Expert, Marksman and First Class. She was also awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945 for her service. While in Saint John she met her future husband Dick Mills RCNVR stationed at HMCS Cornwallis, NS. After her discharge on November 12, 1945 she married Dick and lived in Hamilton, Ontario where they had eight children. Vera was very proud of her military service. She died on July 11, 2015 and is buried in the Field of Honour Woodland Cemetery in Hamilton. MILLS, Sam Walace Sam was born in Burks Falls, Ontario in January 1917. He went to school in Englehart. He enlisted in the Army with the Cameron Highlanders 5th Division in December 1942. Sam served in Italy in signals repairing radios and laying telephone lines. He served during World War II in Italy until 1943 then ended in Germany by way of France. He was discharged in December 1945. After his service, he returned to Englehart where he worked on the railway as an electrician. Sam spent his hours doing many odd jobs for Legion Branch 104, where he was a member for 65 years. His love of fiddle music took him here and there for competitions. He was a loving husband and step-father. Sam passed away in 2009.
