317 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MILLS, Harold Abraham Harold was born in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario on August 23, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on July 24, 1940 with Grey and Simcoe Foresters, Camp Borden during World War II. By February 1943, Harold had advanced through the ranks to become a Lieutenant in the Grey and Simcoe Foresters Armoured Regiment. From the summer of 1942 to June 1943 he was instructor at Base Borden and Meaford Tank Range teaching recruits, Tank Corps manoeuvers and tactics. From June 16, 1943 to June 1944 he was in England taking courses and training tankers in “wet beach” landings in prep for D-Day. On June 6, 1944 Harold along with First Hussars were launched 1-2 miles out to sea in Duplex Drive swimming tanks to lead the invasion at Juno Beach; out of the nineteen tanks launched in his squadron only four were left at the end of D-Day. On June 11, 1944 Harold was killed in action at Le Mesnil Patry, France. He is buried at Bretteville sur Laize, Canadian War Cemetery in Normandy, France. MILLS, James Stanley James was born in Chatham Kent Co., Ontario on January 5, 1897. He joined the Army in London, Ontario on January 5, 1918 and served during World War I with the 31st Battalion Canadian Infantry in France as well as England. He arrived in England on the S/S Grampian. He was invalided home in 1919 on March 19. James’ two sons James Glen and Donald Walter served in World War II. James passed away on December 19, 1935. MILLS, James Glen James was born on April 27, 1918 in Chatham, Ontario, Kent County. He joined the Army and served in England and Belgium during World War II with the 5th Canadian Army Brigade, Workshop overseas-First Canadian Base Workshop. He was a member of Legion Branch 28. James passed away on October 13, 1986.
