307 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MELVIN, Samuel Arthur “Sam” Sam was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on April 27, 1930. He enlisted in the Army on August 17, 1950 with K.R. Can 372 (XVI) Special Force. He served as a supply driver, was injured and hospitalized for some time. Sam was discharged from the military on May 4, 1951. He worked as a gas station attendant and selling Del Auto Parts until his retirement at the age of 54 due to health reasons. Sam passed away on May 10, 2008. He was a member of the Sir Sam Hughes Legion Branch 67 for thirty years. METCALFE, John Alfred “Jack” Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 11, 1918. He enlisted in Army in 1941 and served during World War II with the 4th Canadian Armoured Brigade, 28th Canadian Armored Regiment (British Columbia Regiment, Duke of Connaught’s Own). He trained at Camp Borden in Canada and trained two years in the UK as a tank driver/fitter before crossing to Normandy in July 1944. He bravely participated in the Battle of Normandy, the Falaise Pocket, the Breskens Pocket and the final advance across Northern Germany during World War II. Jack was a Corporal and was awarded the following: War Medal 1939-1945, France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Jack was discharged in 1945 and went on to run his own business ‘Metcalfe’s Garage’ in Owen Sound, Ontario until his retirement in 1985. He had three children with his wife Ruby. He was a member of the Memorial Branch 6 Owen Sound. Jack passed away on July 20, 1993. MERRIAM, Harold Henry Harold was born in Tara on September 19, 1911. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 6, 1931. He became a Flight Lieutenant and served during World War II in Camp Borden, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, Ottawa, Montreal, Aylmer, Toronto, Moncton and Downsview where he retired. He was discharged on April 30, 1958. He moved to Southampton, Ontario and joined the Southampton Branch 155 of The Royal Canadian Legion where he was a member for thirty years. Harold married Mary Walker on August 18, 1937 and had two children, Ruth and Edith. Harold passed away on June 17, 1998 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara, Ontario.
