303 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McMANUS, Patrick J. Patrick was born on March 15, 1920 and enlisted in the Air Force during World War II on March 10, 1941 with the Western Air Command. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions taken as the captain of a Halifax bomber during an attack on German shipping off the Norwegian coast in October 1944. His aircraft was shot down and both McManus and his co-pilot were captured by the Germans. His experiences about the attack and time spent as a German Prisoner of War are detailed in a book he wrote titled “Her Last Trip”. He was discharged on October 19, 1945. Patrick was a member of Legion Branch Perth-Upon-Tay 244 and Upper Rideau Legion Branch 542. Patrick passed away on June 13, 2014. McNABB, Neil Gibson Neil was born in Rockwood on August 28, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served with the Western Ontario Regiment and Lincoln & Welland Regiment in Canada and Holland during World War II. He was severely wounded on March 9, 1945, a bullet wound to the upper left chest. Neil was discharged from the Army in 1945. He became an O.P.P. Officer in the early 1950’s. Then he worked for the City of Guelph until he passed away in 1977. He raised four children with his wife Alice. Neil was a member of the Acton Legion Branch 197. McMINN, Robert “Bert” Robert was born on October 2, 1897 in Tara, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on December 24, 1915 with the 160th Battalion. Bert was a bugler in the 32nd Infantry. He trained in London, Ontario prior to embarking from Halifax on October 17, 1916 aboard Metagama and landed in England on October 28, 1916 during World War I. While on active duty he was wounded and sent back to England to recuperate, the war ended shortly after. He was discharged on January 22, 1919. Bert was married on August 15, 1922 to E. L. May Morrow, and they had no family. Bert was a talented, jovial and a generous man. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and The Royal Canadian Legion in Tara for 35 years. Bert passed away on January 2, 1982 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara.
