301 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McLAREN, Robert Perrin “Bob” PO Robert P. McLaren was born in Richwood, Ontario on March 5, 1920. He graduated from Burford High School, having attended Richwood Public and Drumbo Continuation Schools. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1940, joining the RCAF from being a store clerk in Burford, Ontario during World War II. He trained at Brandon, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton and Medicine Hat receiving his wings on August 8, 1941. On August 27, 1941, he was shipped overseas. Attached to the RAF in Great Britain, he piloted a Wellington Heavy Bomber. Flying with the Moose Squadron he made 31 successful sorties as pilot over enemy territory. He was shot down over the Skagerack on August 18, 1942. His body washed ashore at Ockers, Sweden and was buried there on September 8, 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Kenny McLaren were informed that at the time of that last flight, Bob had received a posting in Scotland, as an instructor but had applied for permission to go into action in the Middle East. McLEOD, Leon Charles Leon was born in Bognor, Ontario on January 4, 1896. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) RCAC in France during World War II. Leon was killed in action in northern France on October 9, 1918. McLEAN, Sid A. Sid was born on March 2, 1924 in Oakdale, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 8, 1941 and served on the Costal Defence of England, Antitank in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was discharged on December 8, 1945. Sid was presented France’s highest honour, the French Legion of Honour; with this honour Sid is a knight and is entitled to be called Sir Sid McLean. Sid now lives in Petrolia, Ontario and has currently been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 216 for 65 years.
