293 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCALMONT, James Alexander “Al” James was born in Odessa, Saskatchewan on May 23, 1913. He enlisted in the Army with the Perth Regiment on August 5, 1940 and served during World War II until his discharge on February 28, 1946. Al was a motorcycle Dispatch Rider. He served in Canada, Britain, Italy and Northwest Europe. James passed away on July 19, 1959. McCARREL, John Albert “Jack” Jack was born on July 6, 1921 in Echo Bay, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 30, 1941. He served in the UK, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. During the war, Jack was invited to a fellow trooper’s home in Belgium for his leave. After they returned to duty, the trooper’s wife, Madeleine wrote Annie, Jack’s sister, with news her brother being at their home and how much they enjoyed his visit. This letter was given to Jack’s children in 1989 and with the help of a friend (with relatives in Belgium) was able to locate the family in 2006. Madeleine, who wrote the letter, was still alive and was very glad to hear from Jack’s family. Since that time, Jack’s family has emailed, exchanged pictures and Christmas cards and continue to keep in touch with Madeleine’s children and grandchildren. Jack was discharged on October 10, 1945. He returned to Echo Bay after the war, married Beulah Hurley and had four children. Jack was a member of the Legion Branch 25 in Sault Ste. Marie for nineteen years. He passed away on May 22, 1964. McCARREL, Archie Russel Archie was born in Ansonia, ON on July 6, 1891. He enlisted in the Army in Moose Jaw, SK on February 19, 1916 and served with the 128th Battalion in Canada, England and France during World War I. He was a Sniper and was shot through the neck at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. A fellow solider saved his life by holding his finger and thumb over the two holes to stop the bleeding while he was transported for medical treatment. He was hospitalized in England. Upon recovery he returned to France, volunteering as a sawyer in an Army sawmill, where he lost his index finger. Archie received a Certificate of Honourable Discharge signed by King George V in 1918. After the war, he took over his father’s sawmill business in Sylvan Valley, married and raised eight children. He was a School Trustee for 25 years, a Municipal Councillor, and an Advisory Committee Member of the Veterans Land Act (VLA). He also received the Canadian Centennial Medal in 1967 from the Township of Macdonald, Meredith, and Aberdeen Additional, Echo Bay. He was a member of Legion Branch 374 in St. Joseph Island. Archie passed away on September 27, 1979.
