287 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTIN, Clarence Clarence was born in East Nissouri Township, Oxford County, Ontario on July 4, 1897. He enlisted in the Army on March 4, 1916 with the 3rd Canadian Division, 9th CDN INF BDE, and 58 Battalion during World War I. He enlisted with the Perth 110 and joined the 58th in France on April 4, 1917 as reinforcement for the pending Vimy Ridge attack. During the morning of April 11, 1917 as part of a group attempting to take enemy trenches in Bois de la Folie, he was shot and suffered a compound fracture of his right femur. The enemy gunfire prevented any rescue during the day but eventually using his rifle as a splint; he crawled back to his lines, lived through the night and was evacuated out the following day. He spent almost the next three years in hospital. A pronounced limp stayed with him for life. He was discharged on March 9, 1920 and upon return to Canada he farmed and raised a family of four in the St. Marys, Ontario area. Clarence passed away on November 15, 1963. MARTIN, Norman Norman was born in East Nissouri Township, Oxford County Ontario on March 26, 1895. He enlisted in the Army on December 2, 1916 during World War I with the 3rd Canadian Division, 9th CDN INF BDE, 58th Battalion. He enlisted with the Perth 110 and joined the 58th in France on July 26, 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions on August 30, 1917 during the Nun’s Alley raid. He participated in Battalion preparations for entering the 3rd Battle of Ypres or Passchendaele. He was killed in action on October 26, 1917 during fighting between Laamkeek and Bellevue for control of the Bellevue Spur. His body was never recovered. Norman is memorialized at the Menin Gate. MARTIN, Nelson W. Nelson was born on December 16, 1912 in Belleville, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1939. He served with the Hastings Prince Edward in Europe during World War II. He was wounded overseas but recovered to carry on until the war end. He was discharged in 1945. After the war he became a successful business man, however, Nelson died on July 26, 1965 from complication of war injury.
