265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LAWSON, Wilfrid Thomas “Tom” Thomas was born on October 28, 1916 in Windsor, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1935, met his wife in 1941, in Vancouver in a whirlwind romance, and was unexpectedly posted to Europe three weeks after their wedding to serve for the duration of World War II. At that time, Tom was a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Signals Corps. During his military career, he had over forty deployments, including England and many in Canada. He also spent fourteen months in Vietnam on the United Nations Peacekeeping Force at the beginning of the Vietnam War. He then returned to the Ottawa area, where he was the CO of the Signals Department in the Diefenbunker in Carp, Ontario. He retired in 1968 with the rank of Captain. He passed away in Florida on February 17, 1990 at the age of 74. LEACH, George Alvin George was born in Timmins, Ontario on November 4, 1922. He enlisted on February 24, 1942 ROC and trained as Fitter A class. On April 1, 1943 he embarked to England. In June of 1944 TOS to RCEME as Craftsman, Welder. He was assigned to 4CABW’s on June 1, 1944 to 104 L.A.D. He served in England, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, 1939-1945 Star and the War Medal 1939-1945. He volunteered for Pacific on May 16, 1945. He was discharged on November 3, 1945. He worked in many areas before retiring from Noranda Mines after 45 years. He received his forty year Royal Canadian Legion pin from Branch 88. George passed away on March 9, 1997. LEACH, Alvin Walker Alvin was born in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario on July 15, 1896. During World War I, he enlisted in the Army on October 27, 1915 with the Northern Pioneer 4th Battalion CRT CEF; later on they became the 159th Algonquin Regiment. He was at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He received GC Badge in the field. He returned to Canada on March 29, 1919. He worked for CN Rail Road until his retirement in 1960. On November 11, 1965 he was honoured by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 in Timmins, Ontario as the last of the Vimy Ridge Veteran from Timmins. He was a Legion member for fifty years. Alvin passed away on October 27, 1966. His son George served in World War II.
