263 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LARGE, Victor Ernest Victor was born on May 24, 1921 in Toronto (East York), Ontario and moved to Orangeville in 1930 with his parents. He enlisted in the Canadian Air Force during World War II in 1941 and attended the Galt Aircraft School, #1 Wireless School in Montreal and was posted to RCAF Western Air Command Marine Squadron and served as a wireless operator on several boats off the BC Coast. He was discharged from service in 1945 and attended Rehab School (now Ryerson) in Toronto. Victor returned to Orangeville, married his wife Jean and they raised four children. His life was very busy with many service clubs, sports as well as 28 years in municipal politics including twelve years as a mayor of Orangeville. Victor was a Life Member of Branch 233 Col. Fitzgerald Royal Canadian Legion Orangeville. In 1993 he moved to Vancouver Island where he was active in legion and traveled to Barbados yearly until his sudden death on February 16, 2014. LAWRIE, David W. David was born in Toronto on June 4, 1918. David attended John Wanless Public School and Northern Vocational in Toronto. He was employed by Tamblyn’s Ltd. before enlisting in 1940. He enlisted in the Army on October 2, 1940. He was stationed at Camp Borden for some time before going overseas and was in England for over a year, then to Italy. David served in Canada, Britain and Central Mediterranean Area during World War II. He served with his brother until he was wounded. David died on November 21, 1944 as a result of wounds received in action while serving with the Irish Regiment of Canada. Members of his regiment onboard the ship acted as pallbearers. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on Panel 15 of the Cassino Memorial, Italy. David was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. David left his family consisting of his parents, two brothers, one sister and a daughter he never met. LAWLEY, Alfred Ivor Alfred was born in Pentland Firth, S. Wales on July 29, 1922. He homesteaded in Manitoba with his family of six when he was six years-old. The family moved to Toronto where he enlisted at seventeen in the Militia in 1939. At nineteen he enlisted in the RCE, went to England and transferred to the Dragoons. He landed in North Africa, then Italy (Taranto) in the battle at Ortona, Hitler Line, Gothic Line, Naviglio Canal. He sailed from Genoa to Calais and drove through France, Belgium and Germany. Alfred married a Welsh girl he met in Britain and has two children. He worked with Scarborough Twp. Superintendent of road maintenance for 34 years. He is a member of Flesherton-Markdale Legion Branch 333.
