261 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LARGE, Donald Herbert Don was born in Hamilton, Ontario on December 20, 1942. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers on July 29, 1959. He served in Canada for three years in Chilliwack, BC and Gagetown, NB. He was then posted to 4 Field Squadron in Germany for three years. After returning to Petawawa he went on a parachute course and was then posted to the Engineer Airborne Troop in 1 Field Squadron. He was awarded the Special Service Medal with NATO Bar. He was released in September 1966. He and his wife Liz have lived in Ripley, Ontario for the past 45 years and has been a member of the Ripley Huron Legion Branch 440 for sixteen years. LARGE (WARD), Jean Elizabeth Jean was born on March 9, 1921 at home in Caledon East, Ontario. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps on October 24, 1942 and served as Sergeant attached to the Army Dental Corps during World War II until his discharge on February 4, 1946. After the war Jean married Victor Large and moved to Orangeville, ON and they raised four children. Jean was a member of the Legion Branch 233 Col. Fitzgerald Royal Canadian Legion Orangeville and her daughter was the first child born to a member of that Branch. Jean passed away on December 11, 1989. LARGE, George William George was born on December 26, 1881 in London, England; he immigrated to Canada in 1908 with his wife and son to live in Toronto. George enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1915 during World War I with the 75th Battalion and went overseas in 1915 to serve as Batman to Major (Rev) William Baynes-Reed, moving through Belgium, France and Germany. He was discharged in 1919 and returned to live in Toronto with his wife and five sons. George moved to Orangeville in 1930. He was a Charter Member of Branch 22 Royal Canadian Legion East York and later was a member of Branch 233 Col. Fitzgerald Royal Canadian Legion Orangeville. After many years of suffering from effects of being gassed in the war, he died on July 19, 1940.
