257 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LANGLEY, Russell Norris Russell was born in Stanstead, Quebec in 1917. He joined the RCAF in 1940; he learned to fly in the BCATP, graduating as a sergeant-pilot at Moncton, NB in the spring of 1941. He was posted to England during World War II, he flew twin engine Hudson aircraft, probably on anti-submarine patrol and was lost on operations in February 1942. He married just before he joined the service, he had no children. His widow later married his best friend, also an overseas pilot, and the marriage lasted for over 60 years. Russell’s gravesite is in St Andrew’s Church Cemetery in Hornchurch, England. His grave marker, about three feet tall, contains in Bas-relief on the top quarter, the RCAF Insignia. The marker is one of many in well-kept rows. The inscription reads: “Flight-Sergeant R.N. Langley, Pilot, Royal Canadian Air Force. 12th February, 1942. Age 24.” LANNING, Steve Douglas Steve was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on October 1, 1971. He enlisted with the Army in November 1989 and served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, B Squadron and DHH Music. After having enlisted, he got involved in Band and as a result, he was then transferred to Air Force. Steve is the Advisor for the Canadian Armed Forces Pipes and Drums, ranks Master Corporal and received the Canada Decoration. LANKIN, Orval Orval was born in Windsor, Ontario on October 1, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on October 3, 1943. He took his basic training in Brantford, Ontario and his parachute training at Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He went overseas in July 1944 and served with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. In December 1944, the unit was sent by ship to the Ardennes to help stem the German advance in the Battle of the Bulge. Orval became ill on the ship and was taken off and sent back to England and was hospitalized with the mumps. When he recovered and was released he served as a Dispatch Rider for the unit until VE Day. The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion returned to Canada as a unit in June 1945. He was discharged in April 1946. He was a member of Legion Branch 190 in Norwich, Ontario. Orval passed away on May 28, 1975.
