229 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KANIS, Peter Claudius Peter was born in Port Dover, Ontario on July 11, 1927. He enlisted in the Army in 1945. With the war in Europe coming to an end he volunteered for the Pacific theatre. He was sent to Vernon, BC for training was assigned to the sixth division. Before his division was to embark for the US and onto Japan, the war ended. He was discharged in Toronto in November 1945 but re-enlisted with the Navy. In January 1946, Peter was sent to the HMCS Naden for an engineering course, and then back to HMCS Scotia in Halifax assigned to defueling ships in the Bedford Basin and on the Starboard Gate Vessel. He also served on the HMCS New Liskeard, HMCS Iroquois, HMCS Nootka, HMCS Lahulloise, HMCS Lauzon HMCS Quebec, HMCS Magnificent, HMCS Bonaventure and the HMCS Cape Breton. Highlights of his service include when he served on the flagship HMCS Quebec for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. Awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration Medal in 1957, he retired in 1964 as Chief Petty Officer. Peter joined the Legion and was a member at Wabush Branch 57 and Galt Branch 121 for a total of fifty years. Peter passed away on October 18, 2013. KEEN, Colin D. Colin was born in Chipperfield, Herts, England on April 16, 1924. He served with the 52nd Lowland Division British Army during World War II from November 5, 1942 to 1947 in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Colin immigrated to Canada on September 9, 1948. He is a member of the Meaford Legion Branch 32 for over 65 years with one year being in Britain. KANNAPIN, Kenneth William “Ken” Ken was born on May 31, 1909 in Kincardine, Ontario. He was a machinist with Sehl Engineering Company before enlisting in the Canadian Navy on August 13, 1942 during World War II. He served on HMCS Stadacona, Naden, Lescombe and Star in Canada, North Atlantic and Scotland. Ken’s rank was Engine Room Artificer 4th class. Throughout the war Ken’s training included: Basic, Steam, Internal Combustion and Refrigeration courses. He completed many duties in the engine room. Ken received the following medals: the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, 1935-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, 1945 War Medal and 1st G.C.B. Badge. Ken served in Canada, the North Atlantic and Scotland. He was discharged on September 11, 1945 and returned to Sehl Engineering Company in Kitchener. On December 8, 1945 Ken married Veldorah Duff in London, Ontario, no family. Ken worked at Wrigley in Chicago as a Tool and Die Maker until he retired. They returned to Kitchener to live. Ken passed away on June 29, 1995 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario.
