225 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOHNSTON, Amanda Beth Amanda was born in Lindsay, Ontario on December 17, 1981. She enlisted in the Navy on August 27, 2008. She did her basic training in CFB Borden and graduated in April 2009. Amanda is now Leading Seaman and is on course to become a Master Seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy. At the present time Amanda is posted in CFB Borden and has signed up for service for 25 years. Her grandfather Wray, her great uncle Maurice and brother Joshua are in Volume 2 of the Service Recognition Collection. Amanda is a two year member of the Legion Branch 67. JONES, Walter Owen Walter Owen Jones was born on October 18, 1924 in Flint, North Whales and immigrated to Canada in May 1926. He grew up and was educated in Alberta. On October 26, 1942 near his eighteenth birthday he enlisted in the RCAF. Upon graduation as a pilot and with a commission, he was posted to Ferry Command. His duties were flying fighters, bombers and cargo aircraft to Britain, Africa and India during World War II. He made eleven deliveries and had made 22 Atlantic crossings before his 21st birthday. His medals and decorations include: the 19391945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on September 28, 1945. After the war, he served 27 years in the public service (Post Office, Farm Credit Corp. and VLA), also farmed seven years from 1950 to 1957. He retired at age 51 on December 30, 1975. He spent 25 years in a condo in South Florida and cruising. Walter’s hobbies include writing and travel. He has been a member of Legion Branch 589 for 38 years. JOHNSTON, Robert Ebert “Bob” Bob was born in Owen Sound, Ontario on January 28, 1918. He was a truck driver prior to enlisting in the Army on July 21, 1942 with the Royal Canadian Artillery, RCEME. He was a mechanic and worked on tanks during World War II. He was discharged on January 9, 1946. He married Hazel Radbourne on February 23, 1942. He had three children, Carl, Bill and Janice. Upon returning from the war he drove tractor trailers for Hanover Transport until he set up his own business and service station in Alvanley (County of Bruce). He was a member of the Tara Legion Branch 383 for 44 years. Bob passed away on May 13, 1994.
