217 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND IRWIN, Albert John Albert was born on June 4, 1925 in Hillsburg, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on February 25, 1942 with HLI. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was wounded in France and spent several months in hospital in London, Ontario recuperating. There he met and married Mary Procunier who was also in the Army. He was discharged on June 5, 1946. He was a Life Member of the Legion Branch 197 Acton. Albert passed away on December 3, 2012. IRWIN (PROCUNIER), Mary Cordelia Mary was born on July 22, 1922 in Bayham Township, Elgin County. She enlisted in the Army on September 22, 1943 with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. She worked during World War II in London, Ontario doing paperwork/forms etc. for Veterans who were injured and hospitalized for their recovery. There she met and eventually married Albert J. Irwin, one of the injured Veterans. She was discharged on June 6, 1946. She was a member of the Legion 197 Acton. Mary passed away on March 23, 2015. IRWIN, Ivan Ivan was born on December 15, 1921 in Lindsay, Ontario. Ivan’s first enlistment in 1942 was short lived, as he was unable to meet the required military physical standards during rifle training. A shotgun accident in earlier years had caused difficulty with his left hand and arm when participating in the rifle drill. Ivan was determined to find his place in active service, so he re-enlisted in the Army on July 26, 1943 and completed Basic Training. His disability was medically rated and allowed him to serve as a RCASC Class II driver within Canada. In 1944, his medical rating was upgraded allowing him to go overseas and he was involved in the North-West Europe campaign moving supplies from the rear to the front lines. He was discharged on April 3, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Ivan passed away on April 15, 1965.
