215 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND INKSTER, Robert Stratton Robert was born in Ottawa, Ontario on May 26, 1920. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 with IV PLDG. He was posted to Scotland in May 1943 for intensive pre-invasion training. With seven days leave Robert came home got engaged and met his future wife’s parents in June 1943. Robert went to Sicily, on through Italy, France, Belgium and Holland from August 1943 to July 1945. From Belgium, on leave he arrived in Guildford, Surry March 22, 1945 and was married on March 27, 1945. He returned to Belgium on March 29, 1945. Robert returned to the UK July 1945 and took de-mobilization leave. He was repatriated to Canada just before Christmas 1945. His wife joined him in April 1946. Robert passed away on January 5, 2009. IRELAND, John Joseph John was born on January 26, 1905 in Carlyle, England. He immigrated to Bowmanville, Ontario Canada in 1922; right away he began working as a Farm and Railroad labourer until he enlisted in the Midland Regiment on August 5, 1940. He was transferred to the Hasting & Prince Edward Regiment. John left for England then shipped out with the Hasty P’s and fought through Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. John was wounded twice with shrapnel. He was honourably discharged on November 10, 1945 being awarded the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the 1939-1945 War Medal. John returned home to Bowmanville and his wife Mabel. Then he began working at the Bowmanville Goodyear Rubber Company. John was well liked and was a credit to the community. He died on August 22, 1966 and is buried in the Bowmanville Cemetery. He was a member of the Bowmanville Branch 178. INKSTER, Yvonne Claire Yvonne was born in Dorking, Surrey, UK on June 19, 1924. She completed high school in June 1941and joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, as an RDF Technician, later known as RADAR in December 1941. She did training in Morecambe in January 1942 and became known as “Chippy”. Her first posting as LAC February 1942 was in Beer Head, Devon followed by Fairlight-Hastings, Sussex in June 1942. Subsequently Yvonne was posted to Yatesbury, followed in Wiltshire in May 1943 as a RADAR Instructor with promotion to Corporal. In November 1943, she was posted to Dunnet Head, Caithness, Scotland. She was honourably discharged on October 1945. She met Lieutenant Robert Stratton Inkster, IV PLDG. Cdn Army in June 1942 and married him on March 27, 1945. The war bride followed her husband to Canada on the HMS Aquitania April 5, 1946. Life in Canada took her to in various areas in Ontario, Valois Quebec and Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia. Currently Yvonne resides in Port Elgin, Ontario. She was a Legion member in Digby, NS from 1998 to 2006. She is currently an eighteen year Legion member of Branch 340 in Port Elgin, ON.
