213 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HYSLOP, Watson Joseph Watson was born on July 1, 1890 in Keady, Ontario. He was the youngest son of Thomas and Sarah (Welsh). He enlisted in the Army on June 25, 1915. He served with the Eastern Ontario Regt. Canadian Infantry in Canada, Britain and France during World War I. Sergeant Watson Joseph Hyslop died of wounds he received in action while serving with the 2nd Battalion in France on September 8, 1918. He is commemorated in page 434 of the First World War Book of Remembrance. He had been through much heavy fighting during his two years in France. He was wounded twice and once affected by gas in June 1918. He received the British War Medal and Victory Medal and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France. To this day, he has several name-sakes as his family is so proud of him. INGLIS, George George was born on February 19, 1898 in Howick Township, ON. He enlisted in the Army on March 21, 1916 at Wroxeter, ON with the 161st Battalion and transferred to the 58th Battalion. He served during WWI in France—Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele. He departed on October 30, 1916 on the SS Lapland; he went to the field on December 1, 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in the field in April 1917, and then promoted to Corporal in the field in July 1917. In 1917 he was exposed to shell gas. George was awarded Military Medal for bravery in the field. On October 26, 1917 he was wounded at Passchendaele, France by a gunshot wound which resulted in loss of function of his left thigh and knee as well as partial loss of function of his right hand (same bullet). On October 28, 1917 the bullet was removed at Canadian General Hospital; he spent time at the War hospital in Bath, England and at Bearwood Hospital where his wound healed. He returned home on ship Mauretanisi in May 1918. He was granted furlough to June 6, 1918 and discharged from service July 6, 1918. He was a member of Howick Legion Branch 307 and also Brussels for over 43 years. George passed away on June 27, 1983. ILSON, Raymond George “Ray” Ray was born in Toronto, Ontario to Mary and George Ilson on March 6, 1924. He was one of six children. He met the love of his life, Mary in 1940. They were married on August 31, 1946. They settled in East York and raised four children. Ray enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 later transferring to the Canadian Parachute Battalion. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II and was discharged in 1946. Ray passed away on April 10, 2011.
