211 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HYNES, Glendon Earl “Shake” Glendon was born in Ross Township in Renfrew County on September 22, 1924. He joined the Canadian Army in Kingston, ON on April 17, 1944 and served with the Royal Canadian Engineering as a Sapper in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He returned to civilian life after being discharged from service on November 17, 1946. Glendon was awarded the France and Germany Star, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Ribbon and Clasp. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Arnprior Branch 174 for 48 years. Glendon passed away on July 17, 1996. HYSLOP, Joseph “Vimy” Joseph was born in Owen Sound, Ontario on August 18, 1918. He was the son of Henry and Sarah (Eldred). He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1942 during World War II. He had an honourable discharge on January 30, 1946. Upon his return to civilian life, he was the husband of Thelma (Flood) and was the father of nine children. He worked for Harrison Furniture Plant for many years. He was employed in the Bronzing Room of Black-Clawson Kennedy in Owen Sound, Ontario. He was named after his uncle, Watson Joseph Hyslop, who died in action in World War I on September 8, 1918 in France. He was a member of the Legion Branch 6 Owen Sound for ten years. He died on January 22, 1971 and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Georgian Bluffs, overlooking the bay. HYNES, Walter Courage Walter was born on May 23, 1891 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. All five foot one inch of him marked his X in Sturgeon Fall on January 14, 1917 when he enlisted in the Army. He served with the 228th Battalion Northern Fusiliers later with the 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops. He served in France during World War I. He worked on the railway that supplied the men at the front. He was discharged on October 23, 1920. On his return he married and had three children. He did some odd jobs and some peddling. As he was proud to say he never went to school a day in his life. As long as he had a roof over his head, some food, his cat and enough tobacco for his pipe he was happy. He lived to be 96, passing away on February 26, 1987.
