209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUTCHINSON, Ross Donald Ross was born on December 29, 1930 in Picton, Ontario. As the youngest of four children and third to join the Canadian Military Services, Ross enlisted for the Korean War “Special Force” Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry on August 18, 1950 serving in Canada, Korea and Japan. His military service awards include the United Nations Service Medal and the Korea Medal. Ross was discharged on December 31, 1952. He returned to civilian life in 1953, married and remained in the small community of Port Perry for over forty years until his passing on March 1, 1995 at the age of 64. While working at Beare Motors for more than thirty years, Ross received a number of General Motors Service Awards for his mechanical expertise and excellent customer service. As a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419 for over 35 years, Ross held positions on the Branch’s Colour Party and also participated on many other committees, projects and recreational teams. HYMERS, Melvin “Mel” Mel was born in Elma Township, Ontario on October 7, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on September 2, 1941. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on March 9, 1946. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He attained the rank of Corporal. Mel passed away on July 24, 1995. HYMERS, Ellwood Thomas Ellwood was born in 1914 to a farming family. He has nine brothers and sisters. After his father died at an early age, he helped on the farm and enlisted with the Battery Guelph 4th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment and went ashore at D-Day. He recalled his mother writing to him about her fears that his brother, also fighting in Europe, had been lost. While marching in Belgium, he saw his brother in the advancing troops. That was one of the only stories he would later relate to his family. He met and married his wife, Eileen, while in England and returned home to continue farming near Britton and raise their three children. Later in life, he reconnected with one of his best buddies he met during the war. The two friends were to reunite once more at the same hospital shortly before they both died in 2002.
