203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOPKINS, Henry Albert “Bert” Bert was born in Tobermory, Ontario on September 4, 1924. He enlisted with the 1st Canadian Special Service Battalion as a Paratrooper in 1942 and joined the First Special Service Force, a combined unit of Canadian and American soldiers that became known as The Black Devil’s Brigade. Throughout his career, Bert advanced from Private to Sergeant. Bert served in Italy participating in the battle to capture the fortress atop Monte la Defensa. Bert was wounded, but returned to the front line for the major offensive on Anzio Beach Head. Bert was discharged in 1946. He re-enlisted a few years later serving in the Congo on peacekeeping missions in the early 1960’s. Bert was discharged from the military in 1965. He received the Bronze Star Medal from the American Government the fourth highest medal awarded for bravery, 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal with Clasp, the Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal. After his discharge, Bert returned to the Wiarton area, and became a Lighthouse keeper at the Lonely Island Lighthouse in the early 1970’s and other lighthouses in the area, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Bert passed away on April 4, 2010. HUBBARD, Cecil Norman Cecil was born in East Nissouri Township, Ontario on August 16, 1915. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on November 22, 1943 and served with the Royal Regiment of Canada in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. During Operation Blockbuster, he was severely wounded on February 27, 1945 and transported back to Canada. After months of treatment, it was determined that his left arm could not be saved, resulting in amputation. For his military service, he received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on November 16, 1945. Cecil was a Life Member of the War Amputations of Canada. He passed away on February 11, 1993. HOSKINS, George A. George was born in Delhi, Ontario on April 26, 1928. He served during World War II in the Navy from November 27, 1945 to November 27, 1950 with the Warrior Magnificent in Canada and on the High Seas. George assisted the flagmen and secured the planes on deck. He went on to be a customs officer and worked on the Peace Bridge and at London Airport. He retired after forty years while working at the custom office in the Collingwood post office. He is the much loved father of four children, a grandfather and great grandfather. He has been a member of Meaford Legion Branch 32 for 55 years. He passed away July 22, 2015.
