201 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOLMES, Frank James Frank was born in Acton, Ontario on April 7, 1920. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 with the Highland Light Infantry. He served four years overseas in England and France during World War II. He was wounded in Boulogne, France when a mine blew up in his face. He lost sight in his eye and had to wear a glass eye after the war. Frank was discharged in 1945. He was a member of the Legion Branch 197 for 27 years. Frank passed away on March 26, 1972. HOLMS, Fred Fred worked out for weeks at the Toronto YMCA to build himself up before enlisting with the 124th Pals. There he started a friendship with Duncan Green which lasted 73 years. Fred was 21 when a sniper’s bullet headed for his stomach, got rerouted by his silver cigarette case. Fred survived the gas attacks at Vimy but, later lost a leg in the Battle of Passchendaele. He returned to Canada in 1919 and helped start the War Amputation of Canada. At the age of 91 he was still involved looking after Child Amputees across Canada. HOLMES, James Robert “Bob” Bob Holmes was born on November 27, 1922 in Owen Sound, Ontario. He joined the military in the Royal Canadian Artillery in March 1942 and served until 1946. He served in World War II in Canada, England and Continental Europe receiving the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Bob re-enlisted in 1955 and stayed in the military as an Instrument Technician in RCEME until his retirement as a Corporal in 1973. Bob was married to Lyla Boyce and had three children Judy, Maureen and Robert. Bob was a member of Legion Branch 72 Pembroke and Petawawa. Bob passed away on September 18, 1999.
