Military Service Recognition Book 546 ONTARIO COMMAND YOUNG, John A. John was born in England on August 12, 1895 to John Charles and Emily (deceased) Young of Brentwood, Essex, England. He had been a gardener in England for three years before he came to Canada in April 1913, with the intention of being a farm labourer at Chesley, Ontario. For two years he worked for John Oswald in Elderslie Township. His attestation paper lists him as a farmer. John was one of the many British immigrants who joined the Canadian Army in World War I. He enlisted in the Army on May 13, 1916 and served with the 160th Overseas Battalion, CEF in Canada during World War I. When the 160th Battalion went overseas in 1916, Pte. Young was too ill to go with the unit. Following an operation in London, Ontario for acute mastoidites, he developed meningitis and did not recover. John passed away on November 7, 1916. He was highly regarded in the Chesley/Elderslie Township area and was buried in Chesley Cemetery. His name is on the town’s cenotaph. He was survived in England by his father and sister. YOUNGER, William M. William was born in Clarkson, Ontario on February 4, 1925. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Essex Scottish Regiment RCIC during World War II. Private William Younger was killed in action on August 16, 1944. YOUNG, Melvin E. Melvin was born in Thedford, Ontario in 1924. He enlisted in the Army and served in Canada and Holland during World War II. Melvin passed away on July 13, 1977 and is buried in the Veteran’s Section, Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia, Ontario.
