499 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SLUMSKIE, Rendall E. “Ren” Rendall was born in Elderslie Township, Bruce County, Ontario on January 25, 1922. He enlisted in the Army in May 1943 and served with the British Columbia Regiment (i.e. 28th Armoured Regiment) in the 4th Armoured Brigade in the 4th Canadian Armoured Division in Canada, England, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Having come from the farm, Ren was disappointed that they were ordered to shoot cows. The Germans had been staking live cows around the German tanks as well as using cowhides to camouflage the tanks. At some point the Canadians had to ask the mayor of the town to open the Canadian tank hatches in the morning because the Germans had been booby trapping the hatches so a concealed hand grenade would explode when the hatch was opened. He was discharged in 1946. The Slumskie brothers – Ren, Roy and Gord – considered themselves fortunate because all three of them returned from the war. Roy served in an RCAF ground crew and Gord was in the Canadian Infantry. He was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for 65 years. Rendall passed away on December 12, 2012. SMITH, Charles Stanley “Charlie” Charlie Smith was born in Apsley, Ontario in 1892 and enlisted as a young man in the infantry of the Great War Canadian Expeditionary Force, 93rd Battalion. This battalion was recruited from Peterborough. Charlie served in England but was discharged from the Army during the war due to health problems. During his time in England, he married and his war bride Alice followed him to Canada on her own, one of many British war brides and the couple lived in Apsley parenting seven children. His son Stanley died in Holland in the World War II. Charlie was a founding and very active member of the Apsley Legion Branch 381 for 44 years. He contributed to the creation of the building using his carpentry skills and spent many happy afternoons in the club room. His wife Alice was the president of the Ladies’s Auxiliary for several years. Charlie continued to be a member until his death on February 11, 1979. SMITH, Brock B. Brock was born on May 9, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in July 1943 and served with the 43rd Battery, 12 Field Regiment during World War II. He was discharged in April 1946 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
