471 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RHEA, Fredrick T. Fredrick was born on April 4, 1917 in Chatham. He joined the Canadian Army on August 6, 1942 and served as a class A mechanic in Canada during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. Fredrick passed away on May 14, 1980. RICE, Arthur George Arthur was born on August 8, 1891 at Rockland, Ontario. He attended Lisgar High School in Ottawa. On November 25, 1915, he enlisted with the 13th Battalion, Royal Highland Regiment of Canada. He served in England, Belgium and France during World War I. In 1916, his regiment made its way to England, where they undertook additional training. In April 1917, they found him as part of the Canadian Corps preparing for its attack on Vimy Ridge. The attack was a success and throughout it, Arthur remained unscathed. In 1917, he was sent on a Signallers Course and appointed Lance Corporal. In late July, his regiment was in training for the Battle of Amiens, Canada’s 100 days. As a Signaller, Arthur volunteered to help guide tanks forward during the attack. On August 8, 1918, on the first day of battle, his tank received a direct hit and he was killed on his 27th birthday. RIBBEL, Sheldon Edwin Sheldon was born in Lion’s Head, Ontario on August 7, 1922. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served with the Royal Canadian Postal Corp in Gander, Newfoundland during World War II. After his discharge in 1945, Sheldon moved to Tobermory. He had a contract to transport Royal Mail between Wiarton and Tobermory. Sheldon was very involved in the community, coaching the Tobermory Flyers Hockey Team for a number of years, as well as being an active member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Sheldon passed away on February 27, 1984.
