457 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND POOLE, Bruce Bruce was born in Norwich, Ontario on August 25, 1896. He joined the 168th Battalion based in Woodstock, Ontario on April 15, 1916 and transferred to the 39th Battalion in December of the same year. On September 17, 1917 he received a gunshot wound to the calf of his right leg and was discharged from hospital on November 12, 1917. On October 2, 1918, Bruce joined the 18th Canadian Battalion in the field. Bruce was reported missing in the field on October 11, 1918 and was killed in action in Iwuy, France. He is buried in the Niagara Cemetery in Iwuy. POTTER, James Sidney James was born on November 1, 1924 in St. John, New Brunswick. Son of James Edmund Potter and Florence Maude Bates both of London, England. He was the youngest with five sisters. At age five, the family moved to Ontario. He graduated from Danforth Technical Collegiate. At age eighteen, on May 26, 1943, he joined the Navy serving on board HMCS Orillia and HMCS West York on the High Seas and in the Atlantic during World War II. He was honourably discharged in 1945. After the war, he worked as a plumber, furniture maker, Health Care Aid and as an Orthopedic Technician until retirement at age 65. In 1951, James married Barbara Kathleen White and had four children. He was a member of St. Simons Boys and Men’s Choir, and active in his church as a sideman. James resided in Oshawa, ON until his death on October 14, 2014. POPKIE, Howard James Howard was born at the Renfrew Hospital on September 29, 1934. He was a child soldier during the Korean campaign 1951-1953. He joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry’s 3rd Battalion Vickers Machine Gun Platoon on July 9, 1951 at the age of sixteen. He served with the United Nations Forces in the Korean Theatre of War, complied with all the requirements and was awarded the Korean Medal, the Korean Volunteer Medal, the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal for Korea, the United Nations Medal for Korea and the Ambassador for Peace Medal from Korea. He was honourably discharged at the age of nineteen on July 7, 1954.
