455 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND POIRIER, Raymond E. Raymond was born in Valcourt, Quebec on December 23, 1919. He enlisted in the Air Force on September 18, 1939 and served as Lance Bombadier in Ortona, Italy during World War II. He invaded Sicily as a member of A Troup, 7th Bty, 2nd Field Regiment, 1st Canadian Division. All equipment was lost when the landing craft unloaded in deep water. Raymond fought in Sicily, the Italian Campaign and won the Military Medal at Ortona. He was discharged on June 5, 1945. Raymond has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 5 years. Ray still visits schools and churches to talk about Remembrance on November 11. POLAND, Mark T. Mark was born in Sarnia, Ontario on September 14, 1971. He joined CF in 1989 as a reservist with the 1st Hussars and earned his commission as an armoured officer. He served as a UN Peacekeeper in Bosnia-Herzegovina, attached to the RCD. He was the A Sqn liaison officer to the Bosnian Serb Army when he was detained by the Serbs for sixteen days in late 1994. Upon returning to Canada, he served as a reserve legal officer with the CF JAG Branch. He returned to the 1st Hussars in 2010 where he was appointed Regimental 2IC. He is currently serving as DCO of RHFofC, a reserve light infantry regiment. He has been awarded the UNPROFOR medal, CPKSM, the Queen’s Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medals, and the CD. In civilian life, he is the Crown Attorney of Dufferin County in Orangeville, ON. Mark is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. POLAND, Brent D. Brent was born in Sarnia, Ontario on October 26, 1969 and grew up outside Sarnia in the Camlachie area. He graduated from Sarnia’s St. Clair High School, York University and Ryerson University. He joined CF in 2002 at age 32 and earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He resigned his commission in 2006 and re-enlisted as a Cpl in order to join 2 RCR and go to Afghanistan. He served with Hotel Coy, a mechanized infantry company, as a light machine gunner in Bravo section, 2 platoon. He was one of six members of his section who were killed in action when their LAV struck a massive IED in Maywand province, approximatively 40 km west of Kandahar on April 8, 2007. He was posthumously awarded the SE Asia medal and Sacrifice Medal. Brent is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery, near Bridgen, Ontario, his ancestral cemetery.
