451 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PAXTON, Clarence B. “Clare” Clare was born in Newmarket, Ontario on January 24, 1916. He grew up in the Richmond Hill area and willingly volunteered on November 28, 1939 to fight for his country and served with the Canadian Army in Britain and Central Mediterranean Area until the end of World War II. Clare took part in the invasion of Sicily on July 10, 1943 and the Battle for Cassino. His Medals and decorations include: 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-45. After his discharge on January 31, 1947, Clare was employed as a Bus Driver with the Toronto Transit Commission where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. Clare passed away on August 28, 1990. PHILLIPS, Charles G. Charles was born in Corhampton, England on July 16, 1890. He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1916 and served with 160 Bruce Battalion in Canada, England and France during World War I. Charles passed away in 1953. PEROVICH, Desmire “Dan” Dan was born in Selichte, Yugoslavia on August 28, 1921. He graduated from the Yugoslavian Royal Air Force on April 1, 1941 as a Lieutenant Morse Code radio operator during World War II. He was taken as a POW by the Germans and eventually managed to escape. While on board a ship to Peru, South America, he met his future wife Olga Percic. He was discharged in 1947. They immigrated to Canada in May 1956. Don worked at Stelco in Hamilton and then at Ford in Oakville. He bought a tobacco farm and settled in Rodney, ON in 1962 where he raised two sons and two daughters. He was also Reeve of Alborough Township, a Director on the Tobacco Marketing Board as well as a member of the Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs. He was a member of the Rodney Legion Branch 525 for 47 years before he passed away on July 3, 2013.
