431 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NEWTON, David S. David was born in Forest, Ontario on July 30, 1900. He joined the 149th Battalion in March 1916. He was just fifteen years old. By July 1916, he was found to be underage and discharged. Determined to serve his country, he went to London and re-attested on October 20, 1916. He joined the 241stthe Canadian Scottish Borderers. He gave his date of birth as 1898. He was sent overseas in May 1917. While in England, he was once again found to be underage and was sent back to Canada in June 1917. He served the rest of his time in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the Military Police assigned to the No. 1 Detachment – London, Ontario. He was discharged on January 10, 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal. David returned to his home in Forest and married and had four daughters. He became a barber. He was a member of Forest Legion Branch 176. David passed away on May 17, 1972. NICOLSON, John “Jack” Jack was born in Scotland in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Toronto on May 19, 1942 in the Transport Command as a Wireless Operator-Gunner. As Sergeant he flew training operations in and out of Winnipeg before delivering planes out of the Bahamas to India and Egypt. He was discharged on June 30, 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, Jack moved several times, returning home to Minett as Post Master. He served as a volunteer fireman, later chief over the next 35 years with the township. Jack was an original member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 489. He earned the Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, Defence Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Jack passed away on November 1996. NICOLAS, Joseph H. B. “Nick” Nick was born in Steinback, Manitoba, on January 15, 1945. He joined the RCAF in July 1962, received his basic training in St Jean, QC, and CommOp training in Clinton, ON. He selected TelOp when CommOp trade split into TelOp and RadOp. He served in CFCC after integration of CAF. He was commissioned from the ranks (CFR) as a Sgt. Nick switched to Army Signal Corps after graduation from CFOCS in Chilliwack, BC. He participated in RV 83/85/87 in Wainwright, AB. He was Fox Troop Commander in 1CSR Kingston, CTC Signal Troop Commander in CTC Gagetown, CO 724 Communication Squadron in Gagetown, NDHQ (Career Manager for RadOp, TelOp, Lmn, Communication Research), TRILS EW Project Lead. Nick retired as a Major in January 1999. He joined Commissionaires Ottawa in December 1998 as Contracts Coordinator, then Operations Manager, and is currently Senior Business Operations Manager for Commissionaires Ottawa. He has been a member of Orleans Legion Branch 632 for two years.
