395 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McMAHON, John Patrick “Pat” Pat was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario on July 31, 1923. He did his training in London, Ontario and then he served as an Able Body Seaman during World War II in 1942. He flew into Halifax and boarded “The Dunver” and arrived in Londonderry, Ireland. From there he went through the Panama Canal to Vancouver, Canada. He took a train from Vancouver to Prince Rupert and boarded the ship “Chignecto”. He then stayed at Nanaimo, Victoria and got discharged on November 19, 1945. After the war, he went to the United States to sell clothing in a high end store. He returned to Canada in 1950 and started with Ontario Hydro. Pat retired in 1984. He has been a member of Legion Branch 140 in Clinton, Ontario for 55 years. His father was in WWI and his brother also was in WWII. McMAHON, Norman John Norman was born in Brimestone Point, Peel Co., Ontario on November 11, 1921. He enlisted with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders on September 4, 1942 and was transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). He served in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Overseas his unit was sent to Scotland to participate in Commando training. The valuable lessons learned prepared him well for his service in Italy. On September 16, 1944 during the battle of the Rimini Gap, attacking the airfield, Norm was leading his section when they came under heavy machine gun fire. Immediately on his own initiative, Norm led the assault, cleared a building, carried on with his men and captured the objective. In the action about eighteen enemy were killed and a number of prisoners taken. Norm received the Distinguished Conduct Medal and part of his citation states: “His initiative, personal bravery, outstanding example and skill in handling his Section contributed largely to the subsequent success of the operation. As on three previous occasions, the gallantry of this Non-Commissioned Officer has been an inspiration to his men and has upheld the best traditions of the Canadian Infantry.” He was discharged in 1945. Norm was a member of the Erin Ontario Branch 442 of the Royal Canadian Legion and served in a number of offices; as President 1968-69 and Life Member. Norm passed away on April 18, 1993. McMAHON, Lloyd George Lloyd was born in Millbrook, Ontario on February 20, 1921 to Mr. and Mrs. Fred McMahon. He enlisted in the Army on August 1, 1940 and served with the Midland Regiment in Canada, England and Europe during World War II. He served as a clerk in the stores. Lloyd was transferred to Kingston, Ontario on September 27, 1942; to Prince Rupert, B.C. in July 1942; arrived in England in October 1942; promoted to Sergeant in July 1943 in England; sent to France on September 11, 1944; to Belgium in January 1945; to Holland in February 1945. Lloyd was hospitalized in Belgium for some time due to the flu and dysentery from March 22 to April 23, 1945. He visited England in June 1945 and married Patricia Forde. Finally on December 11, 1945, Lloyd was in England awaiting departure news to Canada. Sgt Lloyd G. McMahon was awarded the Efficiency Medal for twelve years continuous service while serving in Belgium with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Lloyd passed away on February 18, 2001.
