393 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McLAGGAN, William William was born in Chesley, Ontario on October 6, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1917 and served with the 58 Battalion, Canadian Infantry in Europe during World War I. William was killed in action on August 8, 1918 in France. He was buried in Hourges Orchard Cemetery, Domart-sur-la-Luce, France. McMAHON (WATSON), Alice Margaret Alice was born in Erin Township, Wellington Co. Ontario on August 25, 1926. She left school at age sixteen to work twelve hours shifts as a riveter on Lancaster bombers at Victory Aircraft. On her eighteenth birthday, she joined the Royal Canadian Navy at HMCS Conestoga and served in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia during World War II. Among her many duties, as a WREN, she was receiving and dispatching the incoming and outgoing signals to the various points on the base. She was stationed at Cornwallis and Halifax in Nova Scotia and Royal Roads, Esquimalt, BC. She received her discharge in 1945. Alice married Norm McMahon, a World War II veteran. Together they raised a family of six. Alice joined the Erin Branch 442 of the Canadian Legion, although some males resisted females invading what they considered a male preserve. Over time attitudes changed and women were welcomed as equals. Alice has participated in many Legion activities and is called upon as a speaker at Remembrance Services and other events. McLEAN, Melville Melville was born in Bruce County, Ontario in 1880. He enlisted in the Army in 1917 and served with the 1st Battalion in Canada, England and France during World War I. He was discharged in June 1919. Melville has been a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144.
