379 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McARTHUR, Gilbert John “Jack” Jack was born on August 28, 1896 in Longford, Ontario and moved to Orillia as a youngster. On March 1, 1916 he enrolled in the Army. From July 4 to October 10, 1916 he was at Camp Borden and trained for 157 Machine Gun Expeditionary Force unit in the Canadian Army. On December 20, 1916, he was sent to Army Post Crow Borough Camp in London, England and on June 19, 1917 he was sent to France. On December 10, 1917 he was in Woodcote Park Epsom, England, Hut 1 F Division. From May 12 to November 12, 1918 he served in Seaford, Sussex, England at the Canadian Machine Gun Depot No. 6 Coy with the 3rd CCD. In February 1919 he was sent to a military hospital for shrapnel in his leg and hip area. Upon release he returned to Orillia and became a plumber/tinsmith and married the girl that he had been writing letters to during the war. Jack passed away in 1963. McCABE, William James William was born in Newry, Ireland on September 7, 1907. He enlisted in the Army on September 7, 1939. He served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in Canada, England and France during World War II. He was wounded five times on the beach at Dieppe and taken prisoner on August 19, 1942. During his time as a prisoner of war he was kept in shackles for six months. He was liberated by the Russians on May 11, 1945. William was discharged on August 29, 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45 and the General Service Badge. After the war, he returned to his farm. He also worked at Frost & Woods, RCA as a commissionaire and at Rideau Regional Hospital. William passed away on November 10, 1959. McBRIDE, William “Bill” William was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 19, 1919. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and served in Canada and the United Kingdom during World War II. Bill was involved with repairing mobile equipment during the war. He rarely spoke about anything regarding his military service. Private (LAC) McBride was discharged in 1945. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the King George Medal. He was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for over 25 years. William passed away on June 14, 1979.
