375 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MATHISON, Garnet Harvie Garnet was born in Orillia, Ontario on February 18, 1925. He enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1943 and served with the Black Watch Regiment in Canada, United Kingdom, and Continental Europe during World War II. He was wounded twice: a bullet wound to the right shoulder on August 26, 1944 and a shrapnel wound to the left shoulder on November 30, 1944. Garnet was discharged on August 17, 1946 and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Overseas Service Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. He has been a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 and Bruce Mines Legion Branch 211. MATTHEWS, William Richard William was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 12, 1940. He joined the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Picton, Ontario in 1957. In 1961, William joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and the Princess Louise Regiment as MWO. He served in Canada until he was discharged in 1975. William was awarded the CD. He joined the RCL in 1960. He has been a member of the Col. John Mc Crae Memorial Branch 234 in Guelph, Ont. for 44 years and was awarded Life Membership. William resides in Guelph, Ontario. MATTHEWS, Lloyd L. Lloyd was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on December 21, 1927. He enlisted in the Navy in London, Ontario in 1946. He served onboard the HMCS Notka (aircraft carrier), HMCS Warrier (aircraft carrier), HMCS St. Stephen (weather ship), HMCS Magnificent (aircraft carrier), and HMCS Portage (mine sweeper) during World War II. Lloyd spent time in the Caribbean; Glasgow, Scotland; Trinidad, Cuba; Panama Canal and Bermuda. On his last trip with HMCS Magnificent, he travelled to England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, France and Gibraltar. After his discharge in 1951, Lloyd returned to St. Thomas and joined the Timken Bearing Company and moved on and served with the St. Thomas Fire Department for 35 years before retiring.
