371 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARPLE, William William was born in Woodstock, Ontario on April 11, 1874. He joined the Overseas Expeditionary Force, 5th Battalion on September 15, 1914 at Valcartier, QC. He served in the Battle of Givenchy, France during World War I. William recovered from a bayonet wound and a bullet wound and was concussed by an explosive shell. He was sent to England to recover and eventually discharged on March 15, 1916 as unfit for service. William passed away on April 21, 1922. MARTIN, Clarence Clarence was born in East Nissouri Township, Oxford County, Ontario on July 4, 1897. He enlisted with the Perth 110 and joined the 58th in France on April 4, 1917 as reinforcement for the pending Vimy Ridge attack. On the morning of April 11, 1917 as part of a group attempting to take enemy trenches in Bois de la Folie, he was shot and suffered a compound fracture of his right femur. Enemy gunfire prevented any rescue during the day, eventually using his rifle as a splint, he crawled back to his lines, lived through the night and was evacuated out the following day. He spent almost the next three years in hospital and a pronounced limp stayed with him for the rest of his life. He was discharged on March 9, 1920 and farmed and raised a family of four in the St Marys, Ontario area. Clarence passed away on November 15, 1963. MARSHALL, William Joseph William was born on December 16, 1927 in Washago, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He served in Korea, Congo, Cyprus, Germany, England, Egypt, and Canada. He received the Canadian Wings in 1949 and the British Wings in 1953. William was discharged in 1972. He was a member of Matthew J. Dawe Memorial Legion Branch 631 and Limestone City Legion Branch 560. William passed away on December 28, 2006.
