He enlisted in the Army on November 7, 1940 and served with the Regina Rifles in France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Ed recalls, during his duties at a farm, watching a hen about to lay an egg which he was hoping to have for his breakfast. Every so often he would check to see how the bird was progressing. When he judged that the task had been completed he returned to the nest to find that both the hen and the egg had disappeared. He was discharged in November 1945. When Ed returned to Canada, he worked in the mines in Nova Scotia and eventually at Ferranti Packard in St. Catharines in the transformer winding department. He has been a member of St. Catharines Legion Branch 24 for 65 years. MacDONALD (DARBY), Maureen Gladys Maureen was born on Crown Street, Dagenham, Kent, England on January 22, 1926. She joined the Army in 1943 without telling her parents and served despite ill health to do “her bit” for her country. She served in England with ATS British Army Paycorp during World War II. She served until war’s end in 1945 and married Angus, a Canadian soldier, thus becoming a war bride in 1946.
