353 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MABB, Horace Sydney “Sid” Horace was born in Denton Green, Kent, England on October 18, 1885. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1900’s and lived and worked on a farm in Fullarton Township, south of Mitchell, ON. On October 27, 1914, he enlisted in the 18th Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, Second Division, Canadian Corp at Stratford. On September 15, 1915, the 18th landed at Boulogne, France and by September 25, the battalion was in the trenches in the Ypres area of Belgium. Sid served as a Bomber in Company D and was one of the 27 men ordered to raid the enemy’s forward trench on the night of July 26, 1916 – he was reported missing in action after this mission. Three days later a patrol, which included Sid’s brother Walter, discovered him alive in no-man’s land, but with four inches of his left arm missing. Sid spent the balance of the war in various hospitals in England and was discharged on May 5, 1919. Sid returned to Mitchell after the war, married and raised a family, and despite having no use of his left arm was employed as custodian of Mitchell High School and instructed rifle marksmanship for the school team. Sid was a Charter Member of Mitchell Legion Branch 128. He passed away in November 1962 at the age of 87. MacDONALD, Angus Patrick Angus was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia on May 4, 1922. He enlisted in the Army and joined the Nova Scotia Highlanders in 1939 and later went to 1st Canadian Army, Salvage Division, rising to the rank of Company Sgt Major. He served in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. He proudly served in Europe, and on D-Day landed before main landings. Demolition actions throughout Holland. He married Maureen, who served in the British Army, in 1946. Angus was discharged in 1946. He spent many years in Britain and was a member of the British Legion and The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 375 for 50 years. Angus passed away on December 4, 2012. MABB, James Sydney “Jim” James was born in Mitchell, Ontario on September 2, 1921. He enlisted in the Army at London, Ontario on April 13, 1942. After training at Kingston, Ontario (Vimy Barracks), Jim was ordered to England and was encamped at Epsom Downs, near Aldershot. Prior to D-day Jim was seconded to the 1st British Army and landed in France on June 7, 1944. The 1st British turned north and fought through the channel ports of France, Belgium and Holland. He was stationed in Holland until December 28, 1945 and was discharged on February 13, 1946. He served as Signalman PFC with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals during World War II. He was a Life Member of Mitchell Legion Branch 128. James passed away on November 19, 1997.
