323 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KNIGHT, Alfred George Alfred was born on April 5, 1911 in Greenwhich, Depthford South, County of London, England. He came to Canada by ship at the age of fifteen. He worked on a farm in Camilla near Orangeville, Ontario. He married on April 14, 1935 and had four children. Alfred joined the Army as a mechanic (Royal Canadian Mechanical Engineers) in 1939 went overseas in 1941 during World War II and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Germany as Sgt. Knight for the Governor General’s Horse Guard. He was discharged in 1945. He owned his own business until 1961, and then was employed for Intercity Truck lines until retirement in 1976. Alfred passed away on December 3, 1985 at the age of 74. KUNO, Leonard C. “Sonny” Leonard was born on May 16, 1924 in North Hastings. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in Canada, England, and Italy during World War II and in the Korean War. He was in the Army for thirteen years and served with the First Canadian Brigade, Hasty PC and 3rd RCR. He started with the Hastings & Prince Edward Island Regiment in Picton. During World War II, he served for a short time in North Africa, he became a Sergeant in Japan, and served in Italy where he was wounded by shrapnel to the hip and leg and returned to England as “walking wounded”. Leonard was a spotter in Korea with 81 mm mortar. He received facial injury at Camp Borden during training exercises in the 50s. He was discharged in 1954. Leonard has been a member of Bancroft Legion Branch 181 for fifty years. KNOWLES, John M. John was born in Dundas, Ontario on June 13, 1925. He enlisted in the Army in April 1944 and served with the 1st Canadian Paratroop Battalion in the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged in September 1946. John has been a member of Lions Head Legion Branch 202 for seventy years.
