317 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KELLER, Herbert Lyle Herbert was born in Crookston, Ontario on June 14, 1921. He enlisted in the Army on July 1, 1940 and served in the Infantry, Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. He re-mustered to an Armoured Regiment, Three Rivers Tank Regiment. He remained with this unit for the duration of hostilities. Herbert served in Canada, United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy, and Continental Europe during World War II. He received the 1939-45 Star, Italian Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After his discharge on July 27, 1945, he worked in lumbering, mining and at CGE. He was a church leader, a school trustee and fair board member. Herbert was a long time Legion Member, receiving a Life Membership to Apsley Legion Branch 381 and was also a founding member of Coe Hill Legion Branch 581. He was married and had two children. Herbert passed away on April 29, 2003. KENNEDY, Gordon Francis Gordon was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on June 22, 1914. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served with the Engineers, 2nd Battalion in Holland, Germany, France and England during World War II. Gordon was stationed in France in 1944 with his best friend, Paul LeBlane, from New Brunswick. Paul was killed in action. Gordon was discharged in 1946. He passed away on October 14, 2006. KENNEDY, Benjamin L. “Ben” Benjamin was born in Hamilton, Ontario on September 24, 1911. He joined reserves when he was sixteen in 1927 and when war broke out he joined the RCCS on September 4, 1939. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Mediterranean area, and Continental Europe during World War II. Benjamin was discharged on October 22, 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 193945 Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Efficiency Medal and Clasp and the Defence Medal. Ben was married with four children. Robert, the oldest, spent two years in the Reserve Army and was a Police Officer. Donald spent 43 years in the Reserve Army (RHLI) attaining the rank of Major and worked at Stelco. Jim the youngest joined the RCAF and was killed in a motor vehicle accident. He has been a member of the Port Dover Legion Branch 158. Benjamin passed away on January 8, 2007, at the age of 96.
