313 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOHNSTONE, James D. James was born in Galt, Ontario on June 9, 1925. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1943 and served overseas on HMCS Huron in 1944/1945 out of Southampton in South Glasgow, Scapa Flow and twice to Murmansk. He served on the high seas, in England, Scotland, Norway and in the Arctic to Russia. After VE Day he was sent to Trondheim, Norway to supervise German evacuation and their return to Germany (Trondheim was a large submarine base). Upon his return to Canada in January 1946, James went to university and then law school. He is now a retired lawyer. JONES, Richard Richard was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 3, 1957. He enlisted in the Army on May 29, 1975 and has served with the Lord Strathcona Horse, the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the 8th Canadian Hussars. He served in Calgary and Petawawa while in Canada and in Lahr, Germany. Richard has been on a Peacekeeping tour with NATO in Europe. He was awarded the Special Service Medal for NATO Service in Europe. After his discharge on June 21, 1983, he became an Ontario Provincial Police Officer and received the Police Exemplary Service Medal. Richard retired from O.P.P. in May 2013. He has been a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for over 35 years. JOHNSTONE, John Philemon John was born in Walkerton, Ontario on July 20, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on September 13, 1941. John “JP” trained at various bases across Canada before going overseas. While in England as part of the 19th Field Regiment “800 Technical Wing”, he was wounded. In March of 1945, he was taken off strength of the Canadian Armoured Reinforcement Unit and taken on strength of the RCAF 666 Air Operations Squadron. After discharge on March 20, 1946 with the rank of Battery Sergeant Major, he farmed in Walkerton, Ontario before moving to Tobermory, Ontario in 1952, where he and his family operated Hidden Valley Lodge, as well as a farm and timber operation. J.P. was Mayor of St. Edmunds Township for ten years and Warden of Bruce County in 1974. John was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. His medals include the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. He passed away suddenly on April 19, 1978.
