293 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUGHES, Harry J. Harry was born in Elderslie Township, Bruce County in 1919. He enlisted in the Army in October 1940 and served with the Highland Light Infantry in England and Italy during World War II. Harry was killed in action in Ortona, Italy on October 22, 1944 at the age of 25. HULL, John F. John was born in Oil Springs, Ontario on February 13, 1925. He enlisted on November 1, 1943, in London, Ontario and his advanced training at Ipperwash Army Camp. He joined the Royal Canadian Regiment and was stationed in Italy, where he was severely wounded in Rimini, Italy. Following his convalescence he returned to duty and went to Belgium, Holland and Germany. After the war ended, he volunteered to stay an extra year in Occupation as a Peacekeeper. He was discharged on July 30, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. He was recently awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. John is enjoying his retirement from the Pipefitters Union, Local 663, Sarnia and is still a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 535 Oil Springs, Ontario. HULL, James Lloyd “Jim” James was born in Oil Springs, Ontario on May 27, 1919. He enlisted on January 23, 1942, took courses in heavy equipment mechanics and joined RCEME, serving in England, the Netherlands, France and Germany until his discharge on February 2, 1946. Prior to going overseas, a highlight of Jim’s service career involved capturing escaped German POWs with an unloaded rifle while stationed in Kingston. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, CVSM and Clasp, Defence Medal, General Service Pin, and Dutch Medal. Following the war Jim served his community by being involved in politics as Reeve of Oil Springs and County Counsellor in Lambton County. Jim belonged to Oil Springs Legion Branch 535 and IODE Lodge for several years before he passed away on January 30, 1995, leaving behind his war bride of 53 years Dorothy, three children, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
