285 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOPKINS, Clifford A. “Barney” Clifford was born in Tobermory, Ontario on September 12, 1898. He enlisted in the Army on November 18, 1915 and served with the 160th Battalion in Canada during World War I. He was medically discharged on September 19, 1916 and returned to Tobermory where he built a boat and operated a Charter Boat Service. Clifford was known locally as “Barney”. He has been a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Clifford passed away on October 25, 1963. HOPKINS, Thomas Andrew Thomas was born in Tobermory, Ontario on February 17, 1887. He worked as a Fireman on two steamers before joining the Army. On December 29, 1915, he enlisted in the Army and served with the 160th Bruce Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, Canadian Machine Gun Corps in Canada, England, and Europe during World War I. He was discharged on January 3, 1919 and went on to work in fishing and lumbering. He also worked on a Guide Boat. Thomas was the light keeper at Big Tub Lighthouse from 1928 until it closed in 1952. He was a charter member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Thomas passed away on January 9, 1963. HOPKINS, Harry Allen Harry was born in Tobermory, Ontario on November 2, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on September 18, 1939 and served with the Canadian Armoured Fighting Vehicle School during World War II. He saw action in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. After his discharge on March 5, 1946, Sgt Hopkins worked as a Tour Guide at Birch Island on Manitoulin Island. In 1951, Harry was hired as the Light Keeper at Cabot Head Lighthouse, where he continued to work until his retirement in Tobermory. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Harry passed away on April 6, 1982.
