277 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HINES, Jack D. Jack was born on September 6, 1923 in Morpeth, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on October 12, 1943 and served with the Highland Light Infantry in France during World War II. Jack served in the battle to close the Falaise Gap. He captured 22 German Soldiers by himself and his Major told him he would be recommended for the Military Medal. The Major was killed in action and Jack never knew if the recommendation was ever acted on. He was a member of Legion Branch 10. Jack passed away on September 15, 2007. HOBBS, Peter Peter was born in Bokinicze, Poland on July 11, 1923. He enlisted in the Navy in March 1944 and served on board HMCS Sans Peur, HMCS Sea Cliff, HMCS Uganda and HMCS Mic Mac on the high seas and in Canada during World War II. Peter spent most of the war on HMCS Sea Cliff in the North Atlantic. The Sea Cliff was part of the convoys that escorted ships across the Atlantic. On December 27, 1944, HMCS Sea Cliff, HMCS Edmundston and HMCS St Thomas were involved with the sinking of the uboat U877. All aboard the uboat were saved and taken aboard the ships. For his war service, Peter was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the CVSM and Clasp and the 1939-45 War Medal. Peter stayed in the Navy after the war and was part of a Good Will Tour by the Canadian Navy. The tour travelled to South America, the Faulkland Island, Mexico, Trinidad, Panama, USA and Canada. Peter was discharged in November 1950. He moved to London and married and had two children. He worked as a purchaser at Hobbs Hardware, a wholesale hardware store. He was a member of Tweedsmuir Legion Branch 279 and Forest Legion Branch 176. Peter passed away on September 9, 2007. HINES (HAYNES), Josephine Gladys Josephine was born in Hampstead, London, England on November 30, 1926. She joined the ATS and trained with I Platoon, A company, No. 7 Training Centre. She served in England during World War II. Josephine passed away on May 8, 1993.
