273 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HERBST, Philip W. Philip was born in Kitchener, Ontario on August 11, 1926. He served from 1945 to 1946 during World War II and from 1952 to 1967 as a reservist. He served as an investigator for one and a half years in 30 Co. Canadian Provost Corps and was Squadron Sgt. Major for six years at 48 Field Squadron RCE. He retired as an Engineer classified Lieutenant with Captains pay. He was awarded the Legion Meritorious Service Medal with Palm Leaf and the Canadian Decoration. As a civilian he worked as the Supervisor of Plant Operations for Waterloo County Board of Education and Carleton Board of Education. Philip has been a member of Bells Corners Legion Branch 593 and Waterloo Legion Branch 530 for a total of 45 years. He has been a volunteer for fifteen years at the Perley and Veterans Health Centre. HIGGINS, George Mark George was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 28, 1921. He enlisted on September 4, 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. He joined the Canadian Army’s 1st Canadian Signal Corps as a Signalman and embarked for the United Kingdom. In 1943 after his troop ship survived a torpedo attack in the Mediterranean, he took part in the invasion of Sicily and fought north through the Italian peninsula where he was awarded “Mention in Dispatches” for distinguished service. Later he also fought in France and Germany until the end of the war, being discharged in October 1945. After military service, he worked in the field of geology. In the 1950’s he managed a two-year Geological Survey project in the western part of the newly-formed Pakistan, and then did similar work in the South America living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He later worked for the Canadian government conducting an economic survey of the Canadian Arctic, and later working on Indian treaty negotiations. He was a member of Carleton Place Legion Branch 192 for ten years. George passed away on August 10, 2009. HERON, Robert Charles “Bob” Robert was born in Pickering on January 30, 1925. Leaving home, Bob joined the RCAF (1943-46) and served as a wireless air gunner, part of a ten man crew flying Liberator Bombers in South East Asia. His twenty-first birthday was spent aboard the Queen Elizabeth en route home. Bob married, settled in Brooklin and raised three children. He started his own business (farm equipment) which he owned and operated until his retirement. He was an active member of Brooklin Legion Branch 152 and also volunteered many hours to community organizations and events. After earning his pilot’s licence in 1967, he donated his time and aircraft flying Young Eagles, Boy Scouts and countless others. Upon retirement, he drove many years for Community Care. He received many awards and certificates of appreciation including the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He greatly enjoyed being Brooklin’s Santa Claus, a role he played very well for numerous community groups and others. Bob has always been a proud Canadian and a strong community supporter. He is a life member of Legion Branch 152.
