265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HATFIELD, Alex Stuart Alex was born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia on June 6, 1936. He enlisted in the Army in 1955 and served with 2 Canadian Guards, Service Corps, 2 Service Battalion in Canada, Germany, Cyprus and Egypt as a Peacekeeper. He was discharged in 1978. Alex has been a member of Legion Branch 72 for fifty years. HAWKINS, Thomas S. “Tom” Tom was born in Blyth, Ontario on July 12, 1924. He joined the Canadian Army in London, Ontario on July 23, 1943. After training, he sailed to Liverpool, then Aldershot arriving on Christmas day. He served in Holland and Germany during World War II. In February 1945, he joined the Essex Scottish Regiment. He was critically wounded crossing the Rhine River near the German town of Xanton. After excellent care at Horley Military Hospital in England, he returned home on the hospital ship El Nil on his 21st birthday, July 12, 1945. After a year in military rehab, he went to university, worked as a radio announcer, and taught school. He married and raised five children. Tom was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. He passed away on June 20, 2013, just before his 89th birthday. HAWES (KITT), Joyce E. Joyce was born on February 8, 1924 in Woodstock, Ontario. She enlisted in the Air Force on July 18, 1942 and served with the RCAF Women’s Division. After basic training in Rockcliffe, Ottawa, Joyce was posted to Halifax, NS Eastern Air Command as a Teletype Operator. Here, she was involved in sending top secret messages overseas. To this day, she won’t reveal those messages. After this, she was posted to Summerside, PEI #1 Ground Reconnaissance School as a Corporal in the Signals Office. She became a Teleprinter Operator. Corporal was the highest rank for this trade. She then returned to Ottawa for her final posting and was promoted to Sergeant; her squadron leader recommended this because she was in charge of both men and women in the Wireless Room. She was discharged on May 2, 1946. Joyce has been a Life Member of Elmvale Legion Branch 262.
