259 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARDING, Edmund V. Edmund was born in Sliema, Malta on August 13, 1924. He enlisted in 1942 and was part of an anti-aircraft unit (Kings Own Malta Regiment) whose job was to defend the island of Malta from frequent air raids. After serving there, he was deployed to North Africa and Italy where he was wounded in action. He received a number of medals including the George Cross. Upon returning to civilian life he lived a long and prosperous life in Toronto. Most recently he enjoyed driving around the cadets when they fund raised and had a good time passing on the wisdom of his experience to the young men and women. He loved to sing and dance and enjoyed getting together with friends at the Legion. He was a member of Scarborough Centennial Legion Branch 614 for two years and Highland Creek Legion Branch 258 for five years. He believed a good attitude is the key to success in whatever we do and lived by those words until he passed away on February 16, 2012. HARPER, John W. John was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 13, 1945. He enlisted in the Navy in July 1963 and served on the East Coast and on the Atlantic during Peacetime. He received basic training at HMCS Cornwallis before being sent to HMCS Stadacona in Halifax. He was drafted to HMCS Bonaventure in January 1964 and served as boatswain until June 1966. He took army personnel to Cyprus in 1965 and was involved in three refits, two in St. John, NB and one in Lauzon, QC. Bonaventure was decommissioned in 1966, never came out of refit. He was drafted back to HMCS Stadacona, Halifax where he did his out release. John applied for a two years draft to the West Coast but was turned down. Re-enlistment was five years. John has been a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 for 45 years. HARMAN, William G. William was born in Englehart, Ontario on July 25, 1916. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served with the Brockville Rifles of Canada as a Driver for military soldiers in Canada during World War II. William was discharged in 1943 and went back to farming. He passed away on September 24, 2012.
